Rhode Island’s top political leaders and its Catholic bishop are united against the issue, proud that they have thus far protected the institution of marriage despite pressures from surrounding states.

Why Rhode Island stands alone on same-sex marriage: The Providence Journal

There’s a lot to pick apart about today’s Pro Jo cover story on the marriage issue in RI. But I think what has me most appalled is the fact that paper is presenting the right wing’s framing of the issue as a fact: “proud that they have thus far protected the institution of marriage…”

That’s not a phrase that a supposedly non-biased media source should be using. It’s volatile, partisan phrasing that reinforces the concept that same-sex couples are somehow attacking or causing harm to civil marriage by wanting access to it. That’s what this whole debate is about, and for the paper of record in Rhode Island to use that particular phrase without at least putting it in quotes is editorializing, not reporting.
