Project Pushback is a video contest to change the messaging around marriage equality. This is my entry.

If you register or log in on Vimeo and “Like” my video by clicking on the heart icon, you get entered into a drawing to win a Sony HD Video Camera — and you help me move on to the next round of judging. (IMPORTANT: you can click the “like” icon if you’re not logged in — but it won’t record your vote or enter you to win the camera. You have to create / sign in to a Vimeo account for this to work.)

I wanted to create something different, that would be a direct call to action. No depreciating satire, no photo montages of happy couples — just something simple and powerful. A reminder to the viewer that we all need to speak up in order to create change.

The opposition has been very good about making this debate about horrible things that might happen to “you” and “your family” and “your church” if “gay activists” get their way. Fear tactics.

So I wanted to take a “hope tactic”. Instead of worrying about far-fetched slippery-slope scenarios based on bias, let’s talk about what you can do to help people in your community and improve their happiness and quality of life.

Change begins when you make the decision to openly support equality, and to speak out against anti-gay nonsense. At home, at school, at work, at the Thanksgiving table, on the bus — wherever. It’s something we all can do, and it’s something we all need to start doing if we want to win.
